When in Rome
Wow, what a truly breath taking and fabulous city.
We arrived in a downpour of rain in the evening and thereafter the weather grew warmer and sunnier each day. As a group of Truro College Art and Design students this gave us the opportunity to take hundreds of photographs of the many beautiful places we visited, such as the Vatican City and Sistine Chapel. St. Peters square, The Bridge of Angels, The Pantheon, the brand new modern art gallery – the Maxxi and of course the Colosseum and Forum. Some students even managed to visit a cat sanctuary with their own set of Roman ruins as a home.

As we are nearing the final stages of our Foundation Diploma course this was an amazing opportunity to gain valuable imagery and resources towards our final projects. Each day had a specific itinerary, but also allowed us plenty of time to explore places for ourselves. We had maps with us, but thoroughly enjoyed ‘getting lost’ and disappearing down the many narrow streets with their incredibly tall and shabby chic buildings, coloured and crumbling with a fantastic palette of rich earthy colours. We walked our socks off and were ‘happily’ exhausted.
Rome gave us a truly incredible experience, around every corner was a majestic religious building or astonishingly well preserved columns, particularly in the old Roman Forum. The Colosseum itself was an overwhelming sensation. Walking out into this vast arena, you could almost hear the roar of the crowd in the time of the Roman Empire and visualise what a spectacle it must have been.
Not only was this study visit exciting visually and culturally, but as students we forged many new friendships amongst our group. For some students this was a first visit abroad and indeed a first time in an aeroplane for several, hence a whole range of new experiences. Many of us are now planning our next trips together and look forward to exploring more inspiring cities.
